Forum Ziviler Friedensdienst e.V. (forumZFD - Forum Civil Peace Service) supports people involved in violent conflicts on the path to peace and strives to help overcome war and violence. forumZFD is currently working with peace consultants in Germany, as well as ten other countries in Europe, the Middle East and South East Asia. Its Academy for Conflict Transformation offers a learning space for professional, international peace work. Through dialogue events, educational work and campaigns, forumZFD actively advocates for civil peace policy. forumZFD is recognized by the German federal government as a member of the Civil Peace Service (CPS) consortium. It finances its work through public and private grants, donations and membership fees.
forumZFD’s programme in Ukraine was commenced in 2017 and operates through its programme offices in Kyiv and Odesa. The programme focuses on four interconnected areas: Systemic conflict transformation through tailored organisational capacity development; work towards more inclusive historical remembrance; strengthening of social cohesion; as well as support of sustainable conflict transformation approaches based on trust and cooperation between different civil society actors. Therefore, we work with a broad range of local actors, such as civil society and grassroots organisations, experts, academia, national and local authorities, art community and individuals involved in peace and conflict transformation efforts.
Your tasks and responsibilities
The overall objective of the assignment is to provide ongoing support to forumZFD civil society partners, artists, academia and activists to foster positive civic engagement in Odesa and the neighbouring regions in Ukraine. The Project Manager, Civic Engagement and Advocacy will be responsible for day-to-day management of the civil society engagement project activities, which will include capacity building and training for conflict mitigation, civic education, and advocacy components.
The Project Manager will engage with forumZFD partners and provide mentorship to spark civic participation through focusing attention on emerging social concerns and conflicts in the country and in the process prompting action by the citizenry.
Specific tasks include:
- Identify potentially powerful social change collaboration campaigns/projects and in close cooperation with local partners conceptualize and implement forumZFD’s project activities in the field of Civic Engagement and Advocacy.
- Provide technical expertise to build the capacities of local CSOs and other partners for conflict mitigation, civic education, and advocacy
- Support civil society engagement with the peace and conflict transformation processes pertinent to Odesa region and the wider Ukraine
- Provide technical assistance for civic education and public campaigns to support engagement with processes pertaining to peace, conflicts at community level and other socially important issues outlined in forumZFD Programme Strategy and those raised by partners.
- Participate in formation of meaningful collaborations/coalitions with like-minded organizations, national experts and activists.
- In charge of the communication, messaging and development of social change narrative through use of new media.
- Maintain regular communication with communities, local and regional state institutions, local NGOs, as well as national and international experts to ensure their active participation and support of the project's objectives and activities and to strengthen local and regional capacities for dialogue by fostering the exchange of experience and expertise;
- Frequently visit local partners to consult in the implementation of project activities;
- Manage the administrative and financial aspects of the project activities;
- Liaise with donors, international organizations, and government actors, as needed
- Work in collaboration with project managers and programmatic staff supporting other components of forumZFD programme in Ukraine.
Your profile
- A degree in social sciences, peace and conflict studies, or other relevant discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in civic engagement and education activities, advocacy, civil society, community organizing, institutional development or related technical areas.
- Demonstrated experience in applying methods of nonviolent/civil conflict transformation, in a conflict and/or post-conflict setting.
- Experience in civil society outreach, relationships and partnerships building in advancing organizational mission and recognizing opportunities for collaboration.
- Solid understanding of project cycle management and demonstrated experience in policy and advocacy work.
- Excellent written and spoken command of English, including the ability to write high-quality written outputs, good knowledge of Ukrainian and/ or Russian is desirable but not a must.
- Strong intercultural sensitivity and ability to work in a team; strong ability to think strategically and conceptually.
- Willingness to travel frequently within Ukraine.
- Driving license and experience.
- Citizenship of an EU-member country is required for this position.
Our offer
We offer an attractive position with responsibilities for a minimum of two years in a growing organization (preparation courses, followed by at least two years’ work within the project with the option of extension). As the position is based on the German Development Aid Workers Act (EhfG), it is restricted to citizens of the EU. The position is remunerated according to the provisions of this law, including comprehensive social security benefits and financial reintegration assistance upon return. We also offer participation in qualification and professional development courses (among others, at forumZFD’s Academy for Conflict Transformation), a project-based preparation, regular coaching and, where appropriate, participation in a language course.
As a project manager working for forumZFD, you will work within the innovative field of conflict transformation and peacebuilding through contributing your ideas and skills.
Start of assignment
Ideally, you are available to start working on 1st of June 2021 (preparation courses, followed by at least three years contract with the option of extension).
