Position:  Integrative Mediator
Location:   based in Berlin/Germany, activities and regular trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)

Reports to: Managing Director and Board of CSSP e.V.

Who we are:

CSSP designs and realises peace mediation processes together with local stakeholders in transitional societies. The organisation assists primarily political and community leaders to transform and resolve their conflicts through dialogue, trust-building and negotiation.

The non-profit organisation was founded in 2005 as a “Lessons Learned” project from Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling’s work as the International Mediator in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995 – 2004). Until 2010, CSSP started its work in the Western Balkans and increasingly expanded the peace mediation outreach to the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus.

Who we are looking for:

CSSP is looking for a mediator to become member of our BiH mediation team. Your main area of responsibility will be the implementation and development of our mediation activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with a Bosnian colleague and in close coordination with the Federal Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Sarajevo. You will be the main responsible person for the implementation of activities based on our project proposal as well as on the regulations of the donor institution and all relevant legal regulations. Furthermore, you will represent CSSP and its work on the political level primarily in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany. In close cooperation with our Bosnian colleague and partners you will assess local needs, design activities and processes and implement them. In this, a high degree of independence is expected.The main working location is Berlin. You should be motivated and flexible to travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina every 4-6 weeks for at least one week. The position is a 85% position. The salary is based on the German TVöD Bund and reflects the leading project management position.

Qualifications needed:

  • Mediation certificate and experiences in mediation processes with groups
  • Training experiences in mediation and negotiation theories
  • Experience in leading and managing projects in similar contexts and experience in implementing projects with public funding
  • International work experience, preferably in Bosnia and Herzegovina and/or the Western Balkans, experience in working with political representatives (on state and municipal level)
  • Knowledge of social, political and economic structures in Bosnia and Hercegovina is an advantage 
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and to adapt to new structures
  • Strong social competencies, especially in political crises/ political sensitive situations
  • High degree of independent management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency (written and verbal) in English and German is mandatory, knowledge of Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian is a strong asset
  • University degree in conflict transformation studies, political science, international law, social science, psychology or similar
  • EU work permit
Specific Areas of Responsibilities:
 
  • Conceptualisation and implementation of mediation activities (including workshop and training settings) in Bosnia and Herzegovina in close cooperation with the CSSP colleague in Sarajevo
  • Facilitation of mediation processes on Track II with links to Track I and III
  • Regular and frequent consultations with local stakeholder, beneficiaries and project partners
  • Regular consultations with political representatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany
  • Close coordination with the Federal Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Sarajevo
  • Project Management including budgeting (with support of a finance manager)
  • Regular Reports to donor institution and CSSP’s board
  • Written application proposals in German and English
  • Conflict analysis and analysis of the political developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, also on municipal and regional level upon need
  • Active contribution to CSSP’s mediation approach and the development of the organisation
